Hi there everyone, and happy August!
This week we have fennel again. Fennel is a super food, full of Vitamin C and other nutrients that have been linked to improving cardiovascular health. Try this simple and tasty salad with your next meal!

As the summer carries on, so does the heat… and I’m thirsty! Try using the cucumbers and lemons you’ll be getting in your harvest this week to make a refreshing batch of flavored water. Also known as detox water, this mixture is great for purifying the body while hydrating at the same time. Add some mint for extra flavor, or even some of the basil from your bounty. There are numerous recipes out there but in all honesty, you can add as many or as little of each ingredient as you want – after all, you’re the one drinking it!
Keeping in theme of lemons and herbs, try making this tasty butter to flavor almost anything.
FERMENTATION! That’s the buzz word around the farm right now, since we will be hosting the 3rd annual Fermentation Festival on August 24th (see the newsletter for more details about when and where to get your tickets).
When we think fermented, often the first thing that comes to mind is alcohol… which is definitely not something that benefits one’s health. However, fermented foods are mega healthy but not widely acknowledged. Some of the most common fermented foods we eat are plain yogurt and sauerkraut, and even those tasty Kambucha drinks you can buy almost anywhere now.
Here are some of the main reasons why fermenting is super cool:
- Increases healthy bacteria in your digestive system
- Allows the body to better absorb nutrients
- Many ways to simply and cheaply ferment foods and drinks in your home
- Increases preservation time

Make sure to come to the Fermentation Festival as well. It will be a great time for everyone.
Remember, as Buddha says:
“To keep the body in good health is a duty… otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.”
