Volunteer Docent Program

VOLUNTEER DOCENT PROGRAM
Every year, hundreds of people come to tour Fairview Gardens. They range from classrooms, elderly centers, foodie groups and universities. We would love for members of our community to gain a depth of knowledge on this farm so we have enough docents to give tours to all who want to com see this magical place. Mark, our executive director and Shawn, our farm manager will take the group through specific trainings important to the tour, for example:
- • The History of Fairview Gardens
• Crop diversity
• Importance of compost
• Bees and our dependence on them
• Chickens
• Goats
• The future vision of the farm
You will shadow a few tours before stepping out on your own and making the tour yours! The beauty of these tours is there really isn’t a right way to do them and it really allows for your own creativity to mesh with the each specific group. Tours generally happen during the week between the hours of 10 and 4 and we do our best to schedule tours back to back so one docent can do a couple tours at a time.
Trainings will occur once a week for a few weeks on either Wednesdays or Fridays sometime during the day.
We are currently taking applications and hoping to begin the trainings by October so the docents are ready by the beginning of next year.
If you are interested, please Download and fill out the volunteer application and either fax (805-967-0188) it to Sharon, or mail to:
