Fairview Gardens | Organic Farm Goleta California | Farm Camps | Farm Education | Organic Farm | Santa BarbaraFARM EDUCATION INTERNSHIP

This internship will provide opportunities for four UCSB undergraduates to assist with planning and running educational programs under the guidance and support of an experienced team of educators. This internship provides a supportive role in teaching our new HomeSchoolers on the Farm Program (ages 5-11), as well as assising with our new SPROUTS! program, which provides our youngest visitors with early childhood food connection. Interns will also be trained to lead their own farm tours with elementary school children. Each intern will complete an independent project of their choosing with the objective of enhancing the farm as a learning laboratory. It is important that interns feel a sense of ownership of their work, so creativity and innovation will be encouraged. Examples include developing a learning kit that could be checked out at our Farm Stand by visitors, creating an interpretive sign, or designing an educational element to install in our children’s garden. Independent projects will enable students to tap into their unique strengths and backgrounds and create something lasting. Participants are provided with opportunities to shadow parallel programs in our community as well as other professional development opportunities. Interns will be selected based on experience working with children, interest in food literacy/sustainable farming, ability to adapt to a dynamic educational environment, and capacity to work well with a team.

Schedule/commitment can be flexible depending on student schedule.

This internship will play a significant role in our farming operation as we implement restorative, agriculture techniques to grow nutritious, organic, responsibly grown food with soil-building practices.

You will work alongside our farming and marketing staff, engaging in all activities essential to the operation of an organic and public education farm.Duties include planting, propagation, weeding, irrigating, farm clean up, harvesting, and animal husbandry. Interns work independently and with our close team of apprentice and staff on farming tasks and will have opportunities develop an introductory understanding of organic farming as well as an understanding of the broader food systems in which farming is embedded.  Interns must be extremely motivated, resilient, and self directed. Participants are provided with opportunities to visit other farms in our community as well as other professional development opportunities.

Schedule/commitment can be flexible depending on student schedule.
