Support Farm Worker Housing

While the farm is self-supporting through the sale of its produce, we are in need of financial assistance.  Our farm worker housing is in need of imminent attention to satisfy demands of the City of Goleta and to provide the best living conditions for our valued employees.

On July 1, 2008, the Goleta City Council voted unanimously to approve CUAFG’s proposed plans for our farm worker housing.  This decision represents the culmination of years of dialogue with both the city and our neighbors.  Needless to say, it is highly welcomed and has created a palatable sense of relief at CUAFG.

While CUAFG possesses faith in our long-term goals, we find ourselves in an imminent financial crisis.  The plan approved by the Goleta City Council entails definitive phases; each with strict timelines.  The most pressing issue concerns the status of our current farm worker housing, which consists of two trailers and three yurts.  The City deems these in need of attention for continued inhabitation.  Specifically, the trailers must be replaced with additional yurts while the existing ones require updating.  Additionally, a new kitchen trailer and bathroom facilities must be purchased to accommodate the workers’ domestic needs.

While these represent fairly straight-forward endeavors, the cost is beyond our current means as the estimated cost is approximately $120,000.  Even more ominous, this phase must be completed within 60 days from the City’s decision; thus rendering the target date as 8/31/08.

The following phase of our plan involves connecting all these structures to the Goleta Water District’s sewer system within one year.  This process involves annexation, property surveys, site planning, engineering and copious fees.  There are many affecting and currently unknown factors in this process, but the estimated cost for this entire endeavor is an additional $150,000.  Once these actions are taken, our workers can remain on-site until we build the permanent, sustainable homes.  This final phase of our mandated timeline must be completed within five years.
